Mwananyanda Lewanika on Food Crises in Zambia

Mwananyanda Lewanika, of Zambia's Nat'l Institute for Scientific & Industrial Research, was on the panel that evaluated safety of genetically engineered (GE) corn that was offered to deal with his country's food crisis in summer 2002. In footage from his presentation at the May 2003 Biodevastation 7 conference in St. Louis, he explains why Zambia thought such food was too risky to import. Zambian scientists were worried that potentially allergy-exacerbating GE food could affect the very young, very old, sick and immune-compromised. Host Don Fitz and guest Daniel Romano, 2002 Green Party candidate for US Senator from Missouri, discuss control of the world's food supply. Art Friedrich of the Independent Media Center describes harassment by St. Louis police during Biodevastation 7.
