Green Time TV, May 2014: Assaults on the Environment in Missouri and the World

on Mon, 04/14/2014 - 9:42am

May 2014 welcomes the first shows produced by the Sierra Club for Green Time TV.  This month’s series include Sierra shows on dangers of coal ash and problems facing the Missouri River along with episodes on environmental threats of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), lead mining and forest destruction.

Asking what coal ash means for those who drink well water, the first May show is the debut Sierra program.  John Hickey, Patricia Schuba and Gary Kappler discuss groundwater monitoring, coal ash dumps in Crystal City MO and North Carolina, problems with the Rush Island plant, and ask if Ameren is doing what it should be doing.

The second May Green Time is also produced by the Sierra Club.  It looks at how we could benefit from restoration of the Missouri River.  Don Fitz, Caroline Pufalt and Tom Ball explore advantages of habitats along the river, how the federal government could protect the river, alternatives to constructing levees, and what the river has to do with the Gulf of Mexico “dead zone.”

How are GMOs affecting agriculture, plants, animals and people?  During the third May Green Time, Christine Jackson and Anubis Imhotep Supreme Dey discuss how children should be taught about healthy foods.  They look at the type of food that children are served when away from home and how food deserts affect the black community.

The fourth May episode features Rev. Jed Koball describing a range of environmental issues confronting Peru, how lead mining has affected La Oroya and his work with youth in that city.  He looks at children (and adults) in La Oroya standing up for health of their community and explains how “free trade” agreements contribute to environmental degradation and health crises.

Carbon dioxide is pouring into the atmosphere at an alarming rate.  How are forests, carbon and climate connected?  In the final May show Jim Scheff cautions against losing sight of the importance of forests for a variety of species, medicines, spiritual uses, subsistence gathering, and various other ecosystem services.

May shows include portions of the movies “Coal 101: What’s Wrong with Coal?” “The Sierra Club: About Us,” “Overview of the Missouri River Recovery Program,” “GMO-a-Go-Go,” “Cámbialo!” and “A Darker Shade of Green: REDD Alert.”

Green Time appears at noon on Saturdays in St. Louis on Channel 24-1 and at 8 pm on Mondays in St. Louis on Channel 24-2, Springfield on Channel 39, Joplin on Channel 36 and Marshfield on Channel 17.  April Green Time programs air on these dates:
