Green Time TV: Politics and Environment

on Tue, 06/11/2013 - 3:13pm

Politics pervades every aspect of environmental activities, from relations between nations to governmental financial decisions to personal behavior.July 2013 Green Time TV explores government claims of inability to fund environmental legislation, destruction of land in Palestine, global failure to protect forests, and eating meat.

Did you ever wonder why the government is always broke when it comes to financing education, Social Security and Medicare but there is plenty of money to bail out banks and fight wars?During the first July show, Fredric Raines, of the Washington University Department of Economics, and Rev. Elston K. McCowan, of Star GraceMissionary Baptist Church, discuss making federal and local money available for environmental and social justice needs.

The second episode features St. Louis Palestine Solidarity Committee members Tareq Nabhan and Michael Berg discussing the UN and international law regarding Palestine, as well as how people are denied basic rights of water and medical care. They look at how the Israeli occupation affects the environment and social justice in Palestine.

During the third show Jim Scheff of Kentucky Heartwood discusses how agreements like Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) fail to protect forests. He explains how they can be hurt by a growing economy.

The final July episode asks how animal agriculture has changed in the past 50 years.David Feldmann and Greg Farough of the Autonomy Alliance discuss the way the UN Environmental Program report approaches the question of eating meat.

July Green Times include the movies “The Story of Broke” and “A Darker Shade of Green: REDD Alert.”
