Green Time TV: Protecting Food and Health in Missouri

on Wed, 08/14/2013 - 9:20am

Our food is under attack from big agriculture (especially by its use of genetically modified organisms) and our lungs are under attack from big coal.September 2013 Green Time TV looks at how to stand up to industry.

What problems of agriculture have been around for thousands of years and what problems were created by the industrial revolution?During the first September show, Stan Cox, of the Land Institute, points out that organic agriculture relies on frequent clearcutting of roots. He believes that the best solution will be developing perennial versions of staple grain crops.

The second episode features Eleeahsah Ben Israel, of the Hebrew Israelites, and Christine Jackson, of Healthy Effective Alternatives to Live, discussing self-destructive eating and drinking habits and changes that people could make. They ask if it could be harmful to eat meat from animals that know they are about to be killed.

During the third shows, Doug Gurian-Sherman, of the Union of Concerned Scientists, explains why he does not believe that the US has a public research agenda and policy that promotes truly sustainable agricultural systems. He explores ways that US agricultural practices are resource intensive and wasteful and how they affect rural society.

St. Louis uses far more coal than most urban areas of its size. The final September episode features Sara Edgar, of Beyond Coal (Sierra Club), and Henry Robertson, of Great Rivers Environmental Law Center, discussing health effects of burning coal, how it affects our drinking water, and how thermal pollution of waterways affects wildlife.

September Green Time shows include the movies “Do We Really Need Industrial Agriculture to Feed the World?” “Food Fight,” “Food Heroes,” and clips from the January 25, 2013 demonstration to “Stop Peabody.”
