Green Party Calls on School Board to Resign

For immediate release: September 5, 2003

The Green Party of St. Louis supports students, teachers and parents in rejecting the actions taken by the St. Louis School Board and its management team. The new School Board majority never hinted at any time during its 2003 election campaign that it planned to hire a management team from outside of St. Louis at a tremendous cost to taxpayers. Immediately after assuming office, the School Board majority hired the management company which began a series of actions for which the Board is ultimately responsible.

  • The management team announced the closing of 16 schools.
  • The management team fired custodians and secretaries and about half of all teacher's aides.
  • The management team cut back transportation and announced that many school bus routes would end.
  • The management team took these actions a few weeks before school was to begin, causing chaos in St. Louis schools.

According to Kim Jayne, Co-coordinator of the Green Party of St. Louis, "The school closings are a racist abomination. While 6 of 7 Board members live south of Delmar, 14 of 16 schools targeted for closing are north of Delmar. Those with more money are telling those with less money that their children should go to overcrowded schools where teachers cannot give individual attention to students and little learning will take place."

Jayne believes that "Firing staff in order to hire from private companies will cost the School District far more that the superficial 'savings' the Board majority claims it will reap. Staff such as custodians and secretaries who are hired at lower pay without benefits will work only until they can find better jobs. The constant staff shortage and need to retrain new workers will cost City schools millions of dollars as they destroy the essential social bonds that children and teachers make with the variety of staff who constitute a healthy school environment."

The Green Party maintains that elimination of transportation routes will increase the length of time it takes for children to go to school, making it impossible for many parents to ensure that their children get on the bus safely in the morning or get off safely in the afternoon. It will force many children to walk vastly longer distances with increased dangers such as crossing busy streets.

The Green Party of St. Louis calls on the four new members of the School Board to (1) publicly admit that they violated the public trust by concealing plans for a sneak attack on public education from voters during their campaign, and (2) resign from office.

The Green Party of St. Louis calls on Mayor Slay and the Board of Aldermen to carry out public hearings to investigate and report on the behavior of the School Board and its management team.

The Green Party of St. Louis calls on Missouri Governor Bob Holden to request an audit of St. Louis Public Schools to determine if the management team has misled the public regarding the size of the current deficit.

The Green Party of St. Louis calls on the Legislature of the State of Missouri, which has power over school districts, to declare a state of emergency in the St. Louis School District and reopen all schools which have been closed, rehire all staff who have been dismissed with an apology for their treatment, reconstitute all transportation routes which have been cancelled, and establish the right of teachers to strike.

Green Party Education Spokesperson Byron Clemens says that "St. Louisans have heard far too much whining that the School District is out of money as the Board squanders millions on its management team, the City and State squander millions on an unneeded sports stadium and Washington squanders billions on a War for Oil Profits in Iraq. A few years ago, the US government had no trouble raising billions of dollars to bail out Savings and Loan Associations. If school funds were exhausted, it would be the duty of the School Board to mobilize St. Louis to demand financial support from overflowing City, State, and Federal funds rather than closing schools."

The Green Party of St. Louis fully supports teachers in job actions designed to stop the current process, and also supports parents' decision to keep children out of an unsafe school environment. The Green Party applauds Operation Safe Haven's effort to provide places for children to go until community demands are met.
