Extraction of oil from tar sands is one of the biggest environmental disasters in world history, whether or not a pipeline flows through the US. One of the best changes the St. Louis area could make is strengthening public transportation; but those efforts are being blocked largely due to the dynamics of class and race.

The depth of the current environmental crisis means we must look beyond “green” technologies, which are often little more than excuses for using more energy to manufacture more objects of dubious value.  But changing construction so that homes are more compact can allow for solar and wind power to become truly useful.

The most basic change of all is re-conceptualizing how to use urban space.  Do we really need more highway expansion  and development of luxury homes in north St. Louis?

Groups of young people throughout the US are both challenging companies that stand in the way and offering meaningful solutions. In St. Louis, those companies include Peabody Energy and Bank of America.
