University City’s reputation as the most progressive municipality in St. Louis County is rapidly fading. Council meetings are filled with acrimonious debate over violation of its own rules, repudiation of citizen input, and smear campaigns against those who challenge wrongdoing. Behind the hostility lurks privatization efforts which citizens never imagined that they were voting for: outsourcing of ambulance services, union-busting, ending free yard mulch, threats to close children’s summer activities, turning a children’s playground into a corporate parking lot, failure to oppose the destruction of historic buildings, and perpetual financial smokescreens. Is University City alone in its chaos? Or, does it reflect a drive for privatization that is spreading across the US?
