Wealth used to come from producing goods and services. Now, bankers enrich themselves by betting on market fluctuations. Bankers know that they can do anything they want because politicians will always bail them out. Unbridled speculation has been followed by the destruction of the world, as well as the US, economy.
It has hit black households particularly hard. Predatory lending practices have virtually eliminated the black middle class. Huge numbers of people of color can neither afford health care nor find jobs.
Is economic growth really the answer? We must not allow the 1% to make us choose between jobs today and poisoning our children tomorrow. How can we redesign the economy so that everyone has what is necessary to survive without increasing toxins and worsening climate change?
