Green Time TV: Should the Global Food Supply Be Genetically Engineered?
This month, there will be events across the worldregarding Monsanto’s increasing control of food and its aggressive development of GMO technology. Called “Occupy Monsanto” globally the St. Louis portion of the events is “GMO Free Midwest.” The first Green Time show in September will feature Barbara Chicherio and Daniel Romano reviewing topics to be covered during St. Louis activities. They also remind viewers of the September 9 Pesto Feast. (For details, see gateway-greens.org and gmofreemidwest.org)
The second September show questions the safety of GMO food. It includes Jeffrey Smith’s talk, “Everything You Have to Know about Genetically Modified Foods” followed by a discussion of food safety with Daniel Romano.
During the third show James Meinert of New Roots Urban Farm and Paul Krautmann of Bellews Creek Farm discuss how cultivated plants interact with their living and non-living surroundings. Its footage from “Nicotine Bees” includes interviews with Douglas Tallamy and Dr. Vandana Shiva.
The fourth show looks at the goods and bads of genetically engineered trees. Claudia Henriquez and Daniel Romano explore how GE trees that contain less lignin to ease paper production can make them susceptible to falling over and disease. They ask if there is a lack of sufficient precautions and testing of this new technology.
The final show is Marti Crouch’s classic presentation on “Beyond Terminator Technology.” Dr. Crouch describes differences between traditional crops, hybridization and genetic engineering. She then explains that terminator technology was developed to make seeds sterile so that farmers would be prevented from saving their seed and be dependent on seed companies each year.
