REPEAT film showing and discussion …
“A Sewer Runs Through It:
A History of the River des Peres”
7 pm, Tuesday, March 28, 2023
University City High School Library, 7401 Balson, U City 63130
The 48 min movie documents historic mistakes made in “managing”
the River des Peres (RdP). RdP is the most flash flood prone stream
in Missouri. Yet, in the 1920s, wide sloping plains absorbed flood
water, resulting in minimal damage. What changed to make the floods
of July 26 & 29, 2022 so destructive? The 2008 movie suggests what
happened and how rivers can be brought back to life and contribute to
communities. The panel discussion which follows will feature
comments from those whose interviews appear in it and cover potential
steps to lessen damage from future floods. Panelists include …
Claire Schosser was a Missouri Stream Team volunteer water
quality monitor for the southwest branch of the River des Peres
from 2001 through 2009.Dan Sherburne was Research Director at the Missouri Coalition
for the Environment when interviewed for the movie and has
volunteered for the River des Peres Watershed Coalition.Eric Stein is a retired engineer, technical educator, and member
of the University City Storm Water Commission (specializing in
flood warning systems and channel studies).Chuck Caverly is a botanist and ISA Certified Arborist with Native
Landscape Solutions, which specializes in ecological consulting
and habitat restoration.
Don Fitz (moderator) is Flood Task Force chair, University Heights
Neighborhood Assoc.
