Green Time TV: A Need for Global and Local Sustainability

on Fri, 05/17/2013 - 4:54pm

Perhaps the greatest threat to global sustainability is the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) which is currently being negotiated in secret.June 2013 Green Time TV explores how it could allow foreign lawsuits to overturn domestic courts, expand extractive industries, hasten climate change, reduce access to medicines and increase US job loss.

During the first show, Marilyn Lorenz, of Interfaith Committee on Latin America (IFCLA), and Karen Wilson, of Joining Hands Network (JHN), describe how the TPP could push poor people off their land and cause enormous environmental damage. The second show features Jillian Severinski (IFCLA) and Mark Strothmann (JHN) explaining how previous international trade deals have proven disastrous for El Salvador and Peru, two countries harmed by extractive industries.

The third episode probes a local alternative to global disasters: The Sustainable Backyard Tour.Tour Founder Terry Winkelmann and Backyard Host Travis DeRousse discuss the reasons to rethink the traditional lawn and reimagine how we use our backyards to lighten our impact on the earth.

During the fourth show, Bob Criss, of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University, describes how water is used by extractive industries for the mining of coal, uranium, and lead. How much water contamination is due to bad corporate practices and how much is inherent in industrial production?

The final June episode asks if not eating meat or using animal products (veganism) could help end world hunger.Alexandria Graff and Laura Shields of St. Louis Vegans ponder if people who do not eat meat are malnourished or healthier.

June Green Times include the movies “What Is the Trans-Pacific Partnership?” “Peril in the Pacific,” “The Third the Sustainable Backyard Tour,” “The Hidden Destruction of the Appalachian Mountains,” “Yellowcake,” “Unleaded” and “A Life Connected: Vegan.”
